Soy vs paraffin wax for container candles: an honest comparison

The 30-second version: Paraffin is cheaper and throws fragrance harder; soy burns longer and carries the plant-based label. But wax is only 15–25% of your candle's cost — fragrance oil and packaging move your margin more than this choice ever will.
Almost every small candle brand in India follows the same arc: start on paraffin because it's cheap and forgiving, then feel the pull toward soy for the "natural" story on the label. Both are legitimate. Here's what actually changes in production — and what doesn't.

"There are white patches on my soy candles. Did I ruin them?"
No. That's frosting — white crystalline patches on the surface and sides — and it's a cosmetic trait of natural soy, not a defect. Pouring at 50–55 °C into pre-warmed containers and cooling slowly reduces it. Paraffin never frosts, which is one reason pillar and decorative candles remain paraffin territory.
Here's the cost math nobody shows you
Paraffin costs less per kilogram — that's true. But soy burns roughly 30–40% longer in the same container, so per burn-hour the gap narrows sharply. And zoom out: for a 200 ml container candle, wax is typically 15–25% of your total cost. Your fragrance oil and packaging decisions move the margin more than the wax ever will. Choose the wax for the product story; win the margin elsewhere.
The trick the pros use: blend them
Para-soy blends (commonly 70/30, either way) are a standard move — soy's burn time and label appeal, paraffin's throw and smooth finish. One warning: a blend behaves like neither parent wax, so re-test your wick sizes from scratch.
So what should you do?
Buy soy as flakes, not blocks — flakes melt faster and let you weigh exact batches, which matters because fragrance load is a percentage of wax weight. Add fragrance oil at around 60–65 °C (hot enough to bind, cool enough not to burn off the top notes), stir for two minutes, pour at 50–55 °C.
