Courier bags for marketplace sellers: sizes, POD jackets, and per-order cost

The 30-second version: For soft and small goods, a tamper-evident courier bag beats a box on every economic measure — pick the size off the folded product with 2–3 cm of slack, insist on a POD jacket, and always go opaque.

Picture your evening: forty Meesho orders packed, courier pickup at nine. Every parcel that goes into a box instead of a bag costs you more three times over — the box itself, the tape and time, and the volumetric weight. Which is why, on marketplaces, the humble courier bag is the default for anything soft.

Why the bag wins on cost

A courier bag weighs 5–15 grams and adds almost no volume, so your parcel bills at the product's actual weight — usually the lowest possible slab. That single sentence is the whole economic case against boxing soft goods.

Pick the size off the folded product, not the flat one

A 6.5×8 inch bag fits folded innerwear, jewellery, phone accessories, and cosmetics. Apparel typically needs 10×12 inch and up. The test: the bag should close with 2–3 cm of slack above the product. A strained, bulging seal is the most common reason a parcel gets flagged as tampered — or rejected by the courier outright.

What's a POD jacket, and why does it matter?

It's the transparent pouch bonded to the face of the bag, and it holds your shipping label (the "Proof of Delivery" slip). Marketplace logistics expect the label in the jacket — labels taped straight onto the bag scan poorly and peel off in humid transit. Bags with jackets cost slightly more and save you a taping step on every single order. Take the jacket.

Why opaque?

The milky-white or grey film hides what's inside — from handling staff, and from anyone glancing at a doorstep. For high-pilferage categories that's a real theft deterrent, and marketplace policies favour it anyway. Transparent bags have exactly one job: inner protection inside a box.

The seal is your witness

The permanent adhesive strip cannot be opened and resealed without visible damage. When a marketplace dispute lands — "item missing", "wrong product returned" — an intact tamper seal in your outbound photo is often the single piece of evidence that decides it in your favour. Photograph before pickup. Every time.

So what should you do?

Soft goods: bag them, opaque, with a POD jacket, sized off the folded product. Anything that can crack goes in a corrugated box instead — here's our box guide; bubble wrap inside a bag still takes stack pressure at the courier hub. And if a listing says "60-micron", that's film thickness: 50–60 micron is marketplace-grade — thick enough not to puncture on a zip or hook, thin enough to stay light.
